Back-up electrical generators are, by their very presence, an emergency measure to ensure constant electrical power in times of power outages. The last thing anyone wants is for the generator to fail. Yet this is the most likely outcome if the generator is not properly maintained, and one of the most important ingredients of proper maintainance is the provision of fresh, clean fuel.

However, since the introduction of bio diesel the number of back up electrical generator failures has surged. There appears to be a direct link to engine failure and old “out of shelf life” bio diesel.

Some bio diesels have only a 3 week shelf life, and it begs the question – “when was the last time the fuel was changed?”

Winter is coming and narrow boat owners will be firing up their Eberspacher, Mikuni or Webasto diesel fueled heaters. However, the new low sulphur and bio diesel fuel will be more prone to water contamination and the dreaded diesel bug than in the winters of long ago. New EEC sulphur content reduction regulations have seen to that, along with the fuel suppliers now passing their fuels through intermediaries who offer to blend the end users supply to order, enabling them to have higher bio fuel content and lower costs to enable them to compete on price.

Engineers are reporting that while a big old diesel engine may be able to put up with slightly dodgy fuel and simply burn off the contamination through combustion the more delicate Erbespacher, Mikuni and Webasto heating systems may not tbe capable of handling it.

Some boat users are already keeping a separate white diesel supply to run their heaters on having learned their lesson the hard (cold!) way.

First priority has to be to have the main diesel tanks fuel supply polished in order to remove water, diesel bug and sludge. Then a dose of additives (Marine 16) to prevent further microbial growth.

Once this has been done the likelihood of the Eberspacher, Mikuni or Webasto diesel fuelled heaters stopping due to fuel contamination is very small. Any further problem could now be mechanical and time to call in a heating expert.

Although there are many products on the uk market that offer chemical treatment for diesel bug, there are few, if any, that will remove water from the bottom of the tank which is the food source of the microbial bacteria (commonly known as “Diesel Bug”).

After administering the diesel bug treatment chemical the bugs will be killed and sink to the bottom of the tank and keep company with water, rust and any other assorted debris that has found its way into your fuel tank over time.

So a better way of dealing with the problem is to first have your fuel polished, then introduce the diesel bug treatment for long term care. IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT EACH TIME YOU FILL UP YOUR TANK YOU WILL BE IMPORTING WATER, AS WATER IS PRESENT IN DIESEL FUEL. For that reason a regular fuel polish is recommended to remove the accumulated water. Chemical diesel bug treatment on its own is not sufficient. It will only kill the bugs. It will not remove them or the water that is the prime and initial source of the problem.

Note: water content in diesel fuel has increased since the introduction of EEC ruling that reduced the sulphur content in diesel, and it is only now that the old stocks of higher sulphur fuel are exhausted that the problem is suddenly being reported by engineers called out to solve engine failures and blocked fuel filters.

Diesel fuel contamination can take many forms but the introduction of the new bio diesel fuels, as a result of EEC legislation is becoming an increasing player.

Bio-diesel can absorb up to 1500ppm of water, much higher than pertro-diesel’s 50ppm providing a better environment for diesel fuel contamination. The means that any user of the bio fuels will have a greater quantity of water in their fuel than non bio diesels users. Temperature changes in the fuel tank result in condensation and the water sinking to the bottom providing an interface where the microbial diesel bug lives, breeds and dies building up as a sludge in the bottom of the fuel tank.

Other causes of diesel fuel contamination are poor fuel storage, sloppy fuel transfer and housekeeping practices, and can result in water, sand grit, dust and other debris ending up in the fuel.

Diesel contamination due to the introduction of lower sulphur content diesel fuel is causing sluggish engine performance, engine failure and general wear and tear on diesel engines in narrow boats, farm machinery like tractors and harvesters, boats, haulage industry and heavy plant contractors.

Diesel fuel additives can control or kill diesel bug but will not remove it, relying on the diesel engines ow combustion to burn off the microbes during normal running, however there is evidence that some engines are simply not able to cope with this and engine failures are being reported.

Latest news on the wire is that the authorities at Sharpness are insisting on documentary evidence for boat owners of having their diesel fuel polished before being allowed to exit the canal system and head into tidal waters due to the potential of engine breakdown.
